_The Lies of Locke Lamora_, Scott Lynch

I like a good heist movie, and this is an excellent heist book set in a fantasy of Venice, with politicking aplenty and astounding cruelties; gorgeous costumes and fiendish tortures. The eponymous viewpoint character rises from the gutter to become an apallingly successful swindler...

Yes, but did you LIKE the main character? I, too, love a good heist movie (the "Oceans #" movies were wonderful), and I've been eying this book; but I need to care about the main character, or I won't like the rest of the book, no matter how well written. (This was the problem with the Dune series, for me - the only character I really *liked* was Duke Atriedes, and he got killed in something like the first 20 pages.)
