Finished: _Urban Shaman_, C.E. Murphy. Our heroine is the anti-Buffy. She's got useful skills (auto mechanic, Linux user), a real adult job (police officer), several friends but neither romantic entanglements nor a vengeful god stalking her through Seattle. Whoops, strike that last one. As we are introduced to Joanne Walker, at least two magical traditions start making their presence felt in her life. The Wild Hunt starts rampaging through her city, and Coyote shows up and announces that he is her spirit guide. Murphy manages to pull all of this off without getting bogged down into a police procedural or even hinting at comedy, serves up a few good plot twists, and resolves nicely. No incredible gore, no gratuitous sex, and decent character development. Fun.
