last night I dreamed that Microsoft Windows was a vast evil conspiracy. No, really. The point was to get all the computing capacity available for a massively parallel program which would, when enough nodes joined, awaken one of the Elder God-things. The security holes in Windows are mostly side effects of programmers who really don't care, but some of them are deliberate back doors for the entity to invade and run as a screensaver. One of the early products of the distributed intelligence screensaver would be a Basilisk image that would freeze a human's attention on the screen while the snowcrash virus tried to infiltrate their nervous systems. Then the Elder entity would port itself over to a network of human brains, only the bandwidth was too low, so the earlier slaves would be put to work constructing direct neural interface plugs...
