_The Lost Steersman_, Rosemary Kirstein. Having set up the primary goal of the series about midway through her first novel, Ms. Kirstein now leads us all over the known world looking for the goal, and makes the diversion interesting. I took a palpable hit on my sensawunda gland as I became aware of certain aspects of this planet... Rowan seems built on a competent-serious-female -protagonist chassis that is very sturdy and reliable, and probably on sale regularly, as I see many personality similarities to, e.g. Stross's Miriam (_Family Trade_), Duane's Lee (_Stealing the Elf-King's Roses_) and Harrison's Rachel (_Dead Witch Walking_), to name a few.
