Weber's doorstop is a reworking of _Path of the Fury_; basically, he wrote three or four short stories that wouldn't work as standalones, set in the protagonist's past, and then finshes it off with the the prior novel. Go find my not-too-long-ago review of _Path of the Fury_ and upgrade it a half-step for space marine afficionados. ([Unknown site tag], this might deal with your Warhammer craving. Or not.)

Kirstein continues to write excellent low-tech SF with realistic characters and believable relationships. She also continues to creep up on solving the Big Mystery, as Rowan finally discovers that magic is just sufficiently advanced technology. At this rate, there will be another six good novels before we get to the meat of the matter. I believe this is the sort of frustration that Robert Jordan fans feel, except that each of these books is good. (Snark!)
