_The Space Opera Renaissance_, ed. Hartwell and Cramer.

You could kill a squirrel by dropping this thousand page tome on it, or if you were living in one of the stories it contains you could uplift the squirrels and conquer the universe with your new mammal army.

Lots of good stories, many of which I had previously read. A few too many are excerpts from longer works. Fun.

_The Mammoth Book of Extreme Science Fiction_ ed. by Mike Ashley

Significantly better than a Mountain Dew commercial. Theoretically the stories are ordered by their extremeness (nonconformity?) but I'm not really sure you can get an objective ranking there. Contains one of the most readable short works by Egan: "Wang's Carpets", which is a nifty translation of the 1960s-style exploration starship stories to a Singular framework.
