_Small Favor_, Jim Butcher

Book 10 about Harry Dresden, Chicago's only wizard listed in the Yellow Pages. (And a word about relative populations: it appears that there are between a few hundred and a few thousand wizards on Earth, perhaps a few thousand major fae, a thousand or so vampires... and, as we know, 30 coins bearing the Fallen and three holy swords. All in all, a ratio to ordinary humans that could support the hypothesis that none of this magic stuff is noticed...) In this installment, action commences and Harry devises several clever plans, some of which work. Butcher carries out an excellent misdirection against the reader (or at least, me) and still doesn't clue Harry in on the fact that his intelligent* magical beastly companion is in fact a Fu dog. Sheesh. Good storytelling, and relatively self-contained.

*At least he doesn't talk. Nor is he telepathic.
