_Juggler of Worlds_, Larry Niven and Edward Lerner.
This book is incomprehensible unless you have digested the entirety of Known Space, up to about _The Ringworld Engineers_, and enjoyed the _Down in Flames_ scenario, and speculated about fanfic in Niven's universe... and are willing to accept that pretty much all of the Man-Kzin Wars books are noncanonical.
In other words, this is professionally written fanfic, of the "let's explain what happened through the eyes of a minor character" sort. Lerner's voice isn't quite Niven's, but it's good enough.
For completists who meet the above criteria only.
