_The Path Not Taken_, Simon R. Green
The fifth book in the Nightside series, starring John Taylor, PI. He stalks around a supernaturally dark sub-city in London while wearing a white trench coat and acting tough. Mysteries - kidnappings, murders, lost Holy Grails - are solved for three or four books, at which point Green digresses into a multi-book arc in which Taylor discovers that his mother is Lilith and that he has to kill her. In this book, he dickers with Powers to send him back through time to witness the creation of the Nightside.
Overall, the universe is rather like Gaiman's Sandman, but more frivolously and gratuitously violent. Taylor delights in tweaking the noses of powerful people and beings; it's a wonder nobody stomps on him preemptively.
