_Odd Girl Out_, Timothy Zahn
Book three in a continuing series; the first book was readable by itself, and this one almost is -- it's just obvious that you are expected to have read the previous entries, but the internal story pretty much wraps up. The Interstellar Operative, on the FTL trains, with the mysterious but effective Girl Friday, visits smelly alleys on backwater planets and gets more concussions than is strictly speaking good for him. There's a lot of "what's in that box?" and people being bad at keeping secrets. Aliens with uniform cultures; dirty cops and intrigue on rails. If you want to read a 1940s noir flick in SPAAAAAACE, this is it.
