_Girl Genius_ volumes 1-5, Phil and Katja Foglio
_The Pride of Chanur_, C.J. Cherryh

When goths discover brown, you get steampunk. That's a good line, pity it isn't mine. _GG_ is the physical/web comic about Agatha Heterodyne, mad scientist and lost heir to the Heterodyne Dynasty, somewhere in an alternate Bavaria. The classic Foglio style in which every female character looks more or less like a porn caricature of Katja, and every male character looks like more or less like an idealized version of Phil, plus or minus some facial hair, is in full effect. Being aimed at a less restricted audience than XXXenophile, characters routinely appear in underwear rather than... well.

Jo Walton recently praised Cherryh's alien viewpoint in _Chanur_, so I picked it up. It's not much more alien than, say, Maori or Masai, but it is both consistent and fun.
