And the first book I've started and finished this year is:

_Sandman Slim_, Richard Kadrey

In which our magician protagonist crawls out of Hell (having been trapped there, alive, for the last eleven years) and swears vengeance on all the members of his former coven. In the rest of the book, he takes that vengeance, bloodily and with quite a lot of collateral damage. Similar to _Kill Bill_ in a number of ways, not least of which is that the protagonist proves to be the biggest bad-ass in the room. Very little theology is offered up, presumably because it would get in the way of the action. A few mysteries are set up and solved. Fun, if you like this sort of thing, which I do.
