_The Misenchanted Sword_, Lawrence Watt-Evans

Metahacker referred to one of LWE's books the other day, and I went back to check that I had remembered his reference correctly (kinda-sorta), but that reminded me that I hadn't read most of the other Ethshar books. So...

A mysterious hermit wizard gives our protagonist a magic sword. He promptly uses it to escape from the evil empire, win fame and fortune, get the girl, and lives happily ever after.

Whoops, wrong story.

No, in this one, our protagonist deals with the magic sword by trying to have as calm and quiet a life as possible. Surprisingly, he mostly succeeds. More surprisingly, this makes for a pretty good story, albeit one where only the protagonist gets much characterization.

One. We live in a house of approximately 25,000 cubic feet. At 65F, air can hold about 1 lb of water per 1000 cubic feet. We have humidifiers that put 2.5 gallons of water into the air in 24 hours. A gallon of water is 8.3 lbs. That's 20.75 pounds of water. Where is the water going, considering that the house is sealed for winter, the front door opens for brief periods a few times per day, and we run the humidifiers every single day?

Two. Why is it that my neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and my right hip, knee and ankle all ache painfully? My left leg and torso seem to be fine.
