Bedtime stories
Jul. 18th, 2010 09:55 pmThe kids' last four selections for bedtime stories have been the Harry Potter series. As we come close to the end of each book, we've watched the relevant movie together.
I finished reading book four and Eliz had had enough for a while. She requested that I pick something else. After a bit, I decided on Heinlein. _Have Spacesuit, Will Travel_.
I wasn't sure what kind of reaction I was getting as I was reading the first chapter, as both boys were quiet. When I finished, E told me that it was boring, and we should go back to Rowling.
Z immediately objected. "That was awesome!" he declared. Then he pestered for a second chapter.
Tonight we finished chapter four. Heinlein does decent mini-climaxes or cliffhangers at the end of each chapter, which I think is a prime characteristic of a good bedtime story. E has warmed up to a bit more.
