_LA Requiem_, Robert Crais

The persistent trope of the male closest to the client being untrustworthy is finally broken. The PI is technically not paid, but I would count a bigger payback than usual in the form of political pull. The history of the PI's partner is related. The PI does not kill anyone, though it's close. Relationships get more complex.

At some point I should review this series against Hamilton's Anita Blake novels. By this point (8 novels) Hamilton had jumped the shark and taken it out for ballroom dancing.
