Recently read: Quillifer, Walter Jon Williams.
... I like virtually everything that Williams has ever written; this is not an exception. I also predict that this book will enjoy great success among members of the SCA, since it portrays a largely 'good parts' version of a Middle Ages mish-mash of Italy and England/France.
Also, there is adventure, duelling, battles where tactics are really much more important to the outcome than most people believe, and a small amount of very Shakespearean magic.
And pirates. And a snarky first person narrator-protagonist.
