Winifred is a turtle.
Dec. 20th, 2018 06:29 pmMy father told to me, and I told to my kids, bedtime stories about Winifred.
All Winifred stories start off the same way:
I will tell you about Winifred, a box turtle. She was called a box turtle for two reasons: first, there is a kind of turtle called a box turtle, and she was that kind. Second, she lived in a box.
The box sits under a pine tree, next to another pine tree, on the edge of the creek that runs behind the boy's house. The boy takes care of Winifred. He cleans out the box, and puts fresh hay in, and makes sure she has crisp cold water to drink, and brings her food. Her favorite food is cabbage. She likes all kinds of leafy things, but cabbage is her favorite.
... and then the story continues, basically without a plot and without characters other than Winifred and her boy. Winifred does not talk; her favorite activity is a nap on a sun-warmed stone, and her second favorite activity is walking around.
Every story ends with Winifred safe at home in her box, or, preferably, with the audience snoring gently.
