In a large valley formed by four mountain peaks, the million or so last people have a pretty good life. They are organized into three major clans (and a bunch of minor ones that nobody cares about) who have each specialized in a field of magic. Linden is lucky to have been born into arguably the best clan, the Wei, who are led by their Patriarch and an ancient winterfox-spirit. Anyone who is anyone is busy climbing their way up the ranks of warrior-mages: adolescent Copper, mature Iron, and respectable elder Jade. There are Golds lost in the mists of history, but no-one has achieved that rank in reliable memory.
All lies. The Valley isn't the only remnant of civilization; it isn't even particularly advanced. There's an interstellar war in progress, and Linden doesn't even know he's going to be swept up in it.
This is the sort of book where nobody ever mentions the bathrooms or kitchens or farms or cooks or indeed any profession other than warrior, warrior-specialist, or warrior-smith. The gap between the observed top of the magic food chain and the beginning of the story is at least six or seven books wide...
