166. A Succession of Bad Days
167. Safely You Deliver
168. Under One Banner
all by Graydon Saunders, comprising the first four books of the Commonweal.
The first book introduces us to the Commonweal, an attempt at peaceful society in an environment structured by a quarter million years of magical warfare. We see a local militia raised, a few odd reinforcements arrive, and then the campaign in defense of the Commonweal.
The second and third books are about an experimental school for sorcerors, including a few characters from the first book. This is where our view of civilian life comes from; it's pretty good.
The fourth is full of hope overcoming adversity and sometimes being smashed by it; the Commonweal is still threatened by outside forces.
None of that is sufficient to convey the impact of the books; they are written tersely and densely. References are frequently unexplained until later in the book, and then familiarity is expected in the next book.
I love them.
