170. Outland, by Dennis Taylor

Grad students at a Nebraska university invent an alternate-dimension gate just a few months before Yellowstone spews. Initially they were going to mine gold and get rich, but the end of [North American civilization; civilization on Earth; the anthropocene - pick one, it's not yet clear] offers opportunity to discover survival skills in a land where the Pleistocene megafauna have had an additional 30K years or so to grow. Luckily they get several hundred college students to come through. Unluckily, they have several hundred college students.

Parts of this have been done better by Gould (Wildside) and Harrison (Star Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers), but it held my attention and didn't make me twitch angrily when it ended in dire need of a sequel.
