173. Burning Bright
both by Nick Petrie. As with Rambo, there's this veteran who is home from the war and moving around the country trying to come to terms with his PTSD. Unlike Rambo, Peter Ash isn't being tortured by the author.
In the first book, he tries to assuage guilt by fixing the porch of the widow of one of his soldiers. This is stymied by the very aggressive dog under the porch, who is guarding something very valuable. Complications ensue like we're in one of the good (early) John Grisham novels. An ally and some resources are gained.
In the second book, we come to the dividing line between thriller and science-fiction: this book is a thriller, but if the technology in it carries through to the next book, we will be in SF.
