...bringing us up to date in this series (four books so far). The series adds magic (low level, agreed to by several independent witnesses but of no obvious consequence to physics) as another tool which will likely be thrown away after introduction.
(Or not. Maybe the series is building up to a big crash of SFF tropes. I doubt it.)
Another friend is made. That's an interesting resolution to a thriller about an ex-soldier so damaged by PTSD that he can't bring himself to remain indoors when he isn't highly motivated by a specific task.
