Finished: _Rocket Science_, by Jay Lake. Swish-bang-boom! As Twain wrote, immature authors borrow; mature authors steal. Lake successfully appropriated some of the classic SF tropes, and put them together to good effect. This is a story where a high-tech gizmo falls into the hands of our competent but naive narrator. As per usual, the Reds, the Nazis, the Mafia and the US armed forces are all after it, and none can be trusted. Also refreshing is the length: this is a short novel, the sort which these days we expect to find as the introduction to the six-book epic.

Now actively looking for his other works.

FYI, his short fiction is very experimental, very stylish, often times with endings that leave me scratching my head. It sounds like Rocket Science does just the opposite, so I think I'll check it out. If you'd like to borrow his short fiction antho from me to see what you think, I'd be happy to lend it to you.
