XML is only a "human-readable format" by courtesy. If you want a file to be human readable and writable, there are many better formats. XML is for the benefit of parsers, not people.

I'm not in the least convinced that XML parsers like it, either. It's actually a complex representation to parse.

If not for the embedded DTD fragments, it'd be pretty easy.
