Eliz taught me how to play Milles Bornes a few nights ago.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mille_Bornes (of course.)

There is a flaw in the game that prevents it from being easier to learn: the cards have plenty of space to describe what it is that they do, but they don't.

Remedying that flaw would also make it possible to produce a more complex, yet playable, variant in which more card types could be introduced, a la Magic.

Also, the "Right of Way" card is either too powerful or too rare; I haven't made up my mind. Possibly both.

Ooh—Mille Bornes meets Car Wars!

Could be both, yeah. If it comes up, it makes a huge difference; so its rarity means there's a large amount of luck that can come out and change the course of the game.

Now I want to teach my kids MB.

I'd think the caltrops would be a persistent effect; you get hit when you reach the mileage I was at when I dropped them—unless you counter them first, with a Street Sweeper card. So it's like a Flat Tire, but with an actual explanation.

There is that.

Heh. Or you could cross MB with Pokémon, and have a car race where the cars keep getting stomped by monsters. :-)

I used to love that game. Coopy Dooy We'd say.
