Mirrormask

We just saw Mirrormask, and the question on our minds is this:

Should we immediately rush out to acquire a copy on DVD, or... should we never, ever see it again? Can it possibly ever be as good as the first time?

It would depend on how much you're into version 2.0 of the Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow demo reel.

Mirrormask was a visually gorgeous movie with very little plot to back it up, mostly done against a blue screen, with a few hand props. If that isn't version 2.0 of the Sky Captain demo reel, I don't know what is.

Having missed Mirrormask in the theaters, we skipped rental and picked up a copy upon release (although it doubled as a Valentine's gift for isisofcool). While the story is weak, the visuals were wonderful enough that we're happy to have it in our collection. Of course, we were actually more interested in the Dave McKean art than the Gaiman story in the first place, so the weak story didn't bother us that much (M is a big fan of McKean's work).

M's comment after watching it was that while she loved the graphics, she wasn't quite sure why it was a movie rather than a graphic novel. By which she meant that she didn't really see them taking any special advantage of the medium. I thought that the floating giants (which you appreciate more with their slow movement) and the dimensional transitions between windows (an effect that wouldn't have been as neat on paper) were a good use though.

It certainly seems like the kind of thing you guys would want to own and go back to even if it's not as good as the first time. I vote yes, go buy it.

I don't think it will ever be as good for you as it was the first time. But I think that is far less important than the possibility that your *children* might well imprint upon it, and think it was wonderful forever.
