_Moon Called_, Patricia Briggs
_Courtship Rites_ Donald Kingsbury (reread)

_Moon Called_ has a vampires, werewolves, witches and police, along with a spunky and independent female protagonist. Well, we've seen this before, right? But it's a competently told story that I read in a single sitting (I was trying to recover from the Sinus Cold of Doom). Despite the suggestive cover painting, there was no random sex, on stage or off. Oh, and the entire mystery gets wrapped up neatly in this one volume, no Giant Dangling Threads. Presumably this author will write more, and they will be worth a glance as well.

_Courtship Rites_: if you're looking for non-high-tech hard SF, this is the Weird Culture novel for you. Consistently evokes SensaWunda without ever abandoning a very tight focus on a really strange human-settled planet.

Despite the suggestive cover painting,

These are so interesting when they show up. I have an edition of The Princess Bride which features a naked woman and a snake. They're clearly Very Good Friends.

I've been enjoying your mini-reviews. Someday I might even read one of these books!
