Not that an IQ over 100 (or over 150, for that matter) means you never do anything stupid...

Yeah. I hate to say it, but probably plenty of those respondants had perfectly respectable IQs.

The one thing I haven't seen raised yet about this is that when a man responds to a woman's personal ad on the internet -- and even more so in a M/f BDSM context -- it's considered normal, expected, tasteful and a bit gallant for the man to disclose his personal identifying info to the woman first, so she can check up on him and make sure he isn't a psychokiller, and to even the power differential. Kinda like saying "I wanna take your life in my hands, but here, I'll put my life and reputation in your hands, first." And I think that's a good thing. It's an attempt to show they're acting in good faith.

Clearly what these guys did was dumb. Even profoundly so. At the very least, they jumped the relationship gun by trusting a stranger with that info waaaaaay prematurely. But one of the things motivating them in taking that risk was precisely that they were trying to bootstrap a trust relationship by taking the initial risk.

So, yes, they learned a painful and valuable lesson, and some of these guys were down-right creepy. But I am sad that there is an angle here, by which people are being punished for doing a right thing, punished for being gracious about the differential in risk men and women face in this situation, and trying to do the gallant thing.
