The database alerts went off at 5:15.

On a database which is only seen by customers who are testing out new features. They don't do that outside of their working hours, really. Definitely not predawn December 25th.

Conditional alarms? Intelligent agents that monitor the monitors, and alert you when it's something worth 5:15 am?

Unless they are like a former coworker who didn't celebrate Thanksgiving or Christmas and looked forward to uninterrupted productive time. Which is why I voluntarily worked overnight once a month on that job.

The monitors are supposed to be intelligent, to the extent that we program them to be so. The problem is that we mostly want to tie monitors to services, so that when a service is added to a box, an appropriate monitor is automatically added. So we don't actually set up most monitors directly. This is an edge case, where a database should be monitored for exactly this sort of problem, but the tracking is a little too tight.
