Let's say a self-aware construct. Despite Rule 34 and Blindsight I still have trouble empathizing with a non-conscious intellect. (The fault is probably my own.)
People are born with autism and Asperger's and talents like Gauss and Ramanujan and combine into groups like Bourbaki. If we approach AI via mind-mapping and emulation, I expect that we will make many, many non-neurotypical AIs before we get to a Yudkowsky-Friendly AI.
As we construct them, we owe them what we owe children, I think.
