We're not far from a reasonably priced full-display desk surface -- the entirety of it would be a high-resolution color touchscreen. Waterpoof, and with good ideas about what touches are meaningful (fingers, pens) and which are not (keyboards, elbows, tea cups, books, cats).
Most of the time I have a Big Thing in the middle of the screen, a reference work or two on the sides, and auxiliary activity in the corners. I repeat that pattern across several virtual desktops -- one is for communications, one for news, one for each work project, one for personal. There are many ways of computing.
