_NextWave: Agents of H.A.T.E: I Kick Your Face_, Warren Ellis
_Butcher Bird_, Richard Kadrey
In volume two of NextWave, Ellis shifts from gleefully violent jokes almost incomprehensible without a background knowledge in 1960s and 70s Marvel comics, to gleefully violent jokes almost incomprehensible without a similarly detailed knowledge of Marvel comics from the 80s and 90s. Lots of fun if you want to explosively deconstruct superheroes.
Kadrey put his book online, so you can go and download it from http://www.nightshadebooks.com/downloads
and after you've read a few chapters and are hooked, you can go buy it from them or Amazon or what-have-you. Kadrey is much like Ellis turned down to 8 or so: magic, demons, angels, experimental theology, evil villains, loyal sidekicks, alternate universes and tattoo artists all wrapped up in a plot to save or destroy the multiverse. Halfway through I thought that this was an un-announced book one of N, but Kadrey manages to wrap it all up neatly and satisfyingly in a single volume. Fun.
