Several buildings in Cambridge lost power this afternoon about 1:30 PM; one of them is the one in which I work.

Did my UPS cut in seamlessly? Yes.

Are they scaled for multi-hour outages? You jest.

Even if the outage is not fixed by tomorrow morning, I can still do most of my work: all the production servers are out at a colo site with big batteries and bigger generators. Also some useful communications bits: our main mail server and the Jabber server. So, work can go on.

We got hit too. I went home at 2:30. I gather the power came back on around 5:45, but our servers weren't up until 8 p.m. I gather IT had an EXCELLENT day all around yesterday.

I was talking with one of them today. He says NStar is saying that a line was cut by "a private contractor," by which he infers it was one of NStar's people but they don't want to say that. AND he says that the only way they could have fixed this that "fast" was by rerouting, not fixing; which means they'll have to swap in a new line and move things back - possibly creating a new outage - sometime later.
