If you stand outside Kendall Square Station long enough, eventually everyone you have ever worked with will pass by.

What's really feels strange is to be in someplace unusual and run into someone you know.

I once ran into a summer camp acquaintance from my teenage days running a scam while I was in grad school in Syracuse.

We also ran into an old boss while crossing a bridge in Edinburgh.

I think your experience is more like several fishes in a fish bowl saying "fancy meeting you here". You all live in a fairly tight geographic circle.
