How many factions are there in US politics? Are any of them clear on their goals? Do they make those goals explicit?

As far as I can tell, the official party platforms bear almost no resemblance to how the Rs and Ds actually behave.

...and that is why those who are cynical, frustrated, or nihilistic fall into the trap of saying that the Rs and the Ds are all the same.

To be fair, I believe the Libertarians *are* clear and explicit about their goals. Whether those goals are realistic is another, much more complex question...
