I will attempt to at least record, and perhaps give a mini-review, of each book that I read or re-read this year.

Currently in progress: _Lord of Light_, Zelazny. _Designated Targets_, Birmingham.

Just finished:
_Astonishing X-Men: Vol. 1: Gifted_, written by Joss Whedon. Whedon's trademark snarky dialogue shines through -- perhaps a bit too much, as there were times I was seeing Jane talking through Logan, and Mal talking through Summers. A good story, clean wrap-up, and it's clear that there's more to be told. Looking forward to it.

_Act of War_, Dale Brown. Brown generally writes war porn, and has hitherto kept to a more-or-less consistent alternate present, diverging from our own in the early 80s. This is not part of that continuity. I'm afraid that the best that can be said for his characters are that they are wooden; the technogadget is implausible (a 3 meter-high combat mecha/powersuit, capable of acting semiautonomously, weighing in at 100 pounds, with a combat duration of 48 hours. Where the hell does the power come from? "a hydrogen fuel cell, a battery, and solar cells" Yeah right. Where did the weight go?) The hidden villain is obvious the second time he steps on stage. Not anywhere near as good as Brown's best.

_Top Ten: The Forty-Niners_, written by Alan Moore. The immediate post-WWII history of Neopolis, seen through the eyes of Jetboy. More good Moore, but won't make much emotional impact if you haven't read at least the first volume of Top Ten.
