Finished: _The Algebraist_, Iain M. Banks. Proof by existence that Banks can fit a complete story in one volume, in approximately linear chronological order, stretching over a humanly graspable period of time, with a reasonably limited number of characters, with a likeable protagonist, with a reasonably happy ending. It also happens to be quite a bit of fun. Possibly the only Banks SF novel to date that would make a good movie, although you'd need to hire Henson, Pixar and ILM to handle the special effects convincingly. This might be a good book to introduce someone to Banks.
