_The Armies of Memory_, John Barnes.
This book will make no sense to you without having read the three predecessors: _A Million Open Doors_, _Earth Made of Glass_, and _The Merchants of Souls_. And if you haven't read any of them, I have to warn you that all of those three are tragedies, and the last is particularly awful. Oh, and Barnes has a knack for tossing in brief scenes of incredible violence and gore.
That said, he's also an excellent storyteller, and he manages to cap off this series with a significantly upbeat note, full of hope after achieving some notable successes. If you stop reading this series before finishing (with this book), you'll be missing out on a lot.
