_My Own Kind Of Freedom_, Steven Brust

If a major published author writes a media tie-in novel, it's generally thought that this is because the mortgage is due every month. See Matt Hughes, Mathew Woodring Stover, Mike Ford, Walter Jon Williams, et cetera and so forth. Sometimes they do a really good job because they are professional storytellers. (See all of above, in fact.)

But when said major published author writes a media tie-in novel on spec, and then doesn't have it published by the rights-holder, and having no paying market decides to set it free on the Net, said novel instantaneously transmigrates categories into fanfic.

So. As an SF novel, it's mediocre. As a Firefly novel, this is utterly wonderful. And hopefully Brust will be paid lots and lots of money for his next project.

Occasionally people ask me to help them pick out a knife. Generally, they want something for daily carry, reliable, strong, and useful. Not too heavy, either.

These are what I'm currently eyeing:

Benchmade Griptilian BM550HG
$60-70 dollars plus shipping.

Decent steel, lightweight, good blade profile.

Spyderco Endura, 4th Generation, with ZDP-189 steel SP10PGRE
$80 plus shipping

A little heavier, a new rock-star steel, and great ergonomics
