_Black Echo_, Michael Connelly (Spoilers, it's a twenty year old book.)

The first of many novels about Hieronymous Bosch, an LAPD homicide detective. There is a murder. There is a complicated plot in which Harry is repeatedly warned off the case, which of course makes him all the more determined. That's how these things go. Internal Affairs, the FBI, and organized crime make substantial contributions, often at cross-purposes to each other (but not always). The theme seemed to demand that the sole significant female character betray Harry, and this did not materialize... so I decided that she would have to die before the end of the story. Then she betrayed him.

I wonder if that will be an ongoing trope.
