_Africa Zero_, Neal Asher.
Grim Meathook Future: global warming, plagues (some engineered), sterility, population crash.
Not enough.
Comet impact, global winter, engineered intelligent predators ("Great African Vampire").
Enough?
Abandonment of Earth by industrial civilization -- space colonies, NAFAL colonization missions. Humanity's future is assured... just not on Earth.
OK. In this setting, Asher writes about a total-body-replacement cyborg called the Collector, who's eternal mission is to collect genetic samples of strange species and occasionally try his hand at creating some new ones. The only problem with this is that there is no villain in the story capable of giving him a challenge. Or, possibly, that he's the villain and there is no hero capable of stopping him.
