He managed to surprise me by jumping tropes. I thought it was YA, but it isn't. I thought it was "welcome to the world of magic" and it sort of is, sort of isn't. I thought it would be a magic academy, but it's more like _Real Genius_ than either Rowling or Grossman. Funny, but not a comedy; action, but not a pure thriller.
Good writing, marred by odd spelling choices. The first book ends on a cliffhanger; you should consider this one story in two volumes.
