The eighteenth or so volume of the adventures of Kris "The Author Loves Me" Longknife, in which she faces diplomatic adversity and tries to refrain from slaughtering too many of her technical allies.
It's the modern pulp: a good story moment-by-moment, but you know the good guys are going to win through superior [cleverness, technology, tactics, force...] and the bad guys are all treacherous jerks. At least Shepherd (Moscoe) keeps internal consistency and remembers all the technological capabilities.
