There are three narrative threads, and one of them appears to be entirely backstory for the [as yet unwritten] sequel.
There is a romance which springs out of nearly nowhere and has the major effect of making one character very loyal to a viewpoint character without, apparently, inspiring much reciprocal loyalty.
There is undeserved trust amidst nasty political maneuvering.
There is a multi-millenial star empire that depends on keeping the secret of constructing stargates, only the process appears to require hundreds to thousands of people working together and the secret formula is shared by at least dozens of people per system. Oh, and the empire allows non-governed planets to exist in the same systems that it links by gate. Oh, and there's a secret spy clan (at least one) that is universally respected to the extent of making binding contracts for 90% of all future income in order to obtain unlikely intelligence.
There's complicated computer-brain-interface tech that is universally used but not for piloting space fighters.
