_The Apprentice_, Jacques Pepin

Goldsquare suggested this as an antidote to Marcus Pierre White. He was entirely correct. Pepin's autobiography contains no assaults*, no gratuitous rudeness, no overly-sharp business deals. The worst he has to say about anyone is that Howard Johnson Jr. was not as good a businessman as his father.

I can't or wouldn't eat most of the food he writes about, but he writes about it very well.

*there are a few teenage apprentice practical jokes played. None involve hurting people.

In a recent re-run of Jacques and Julia, Jacques mentioned a technique that "I used to use at Howard Johnsons". Julia quiped "I wonder if they still do it", and Jacques answered "I would suppose not".

That's about as mean as he'll get, on the record.

He's a gentleman, in a world with an insufficiency of them.

Robin and I have tickets to see him lecture this fall - I cannot wait.
