Sunday morning I tripped over something, slammed my left foot into an immovable object, and grazed my hand on the ceiling while keeping some semblance of balance. After ice, it was merely red and swollen and painful.
Monday evening I whacked the same toe into a doorframe. After ice, the toenail was in bad shape and it turned purple and shiny.
This morning it is still purplish, but I can walk if I avoid putting weight on the toe. Otherwise I have a sort of low-level throbbing.
If you have a bruise under the nail, investigate releasing the bruise either yourself, or via a doctor. It will relieve a lot of the pain, and might save the nail.

So -- possibly both.
