One of my favorite stories about "animals that are going to live on after humans have all died out" was about coyotes (who, I believe, now live in all 50 states). The storyteller told of seeing a coyote crossing a two-lane highway. It came to the edge of the road, looked *the correct direction* to see if there were oncoming traffic; crossed to the yellow line, looked *the correct direction* again to check if additional traffic were coming, and then finished crossing. It did not bother to look the other direction in either case - just the direction the traffic would be coming from.
