I just watched a large rabbit crossing the road. He stopped at the verge, looked right, looked left, then proceeded across.

One of my favorite stories about "animals that are going to live on after humans have all died out" was about coyotes (who, I believe, now live in all 50 states). The storyteller told of seeing a coyote crossing a two-lane highway. It came to the edge of the road, looked *the correct direction* to see if there were oncoming traffic; crossed to the yellow line, looked *the correct direction* again to check if additional traffic were coming, and then finished crossing. It did not bother to look the other direction in either case - just the direction the traffic would be coming from.
