The non-obsolescence of certain objects

I was just looking at a bird in a tree across the street (a cardinal, pretty much the only local bird that can be spotted in the current snowstorm) with a pair of binoculars... which my parents gave me on my ninth or tenth birthday. Not the fanciest things in the world, but still in good shape.

I don't expect a hard disk, made to much finer tolerances, to last 25+ years. On the other hand, I didn't spin the binocs at 5400RPM.

Binoculars, toasters, leather belts, voltage meters ... not changing much.
Cameras, coffee-makers, oscilloscopes, telephones ... my kids will not recognize the ones I had as anything but arcane-technologies from the dim past.
