- it's set in the future, after civilization collapsed and magic was reborn
- yet almost nothing has been changed, socially. Magic floating cabs replace internal combustion engines.
- Lots of people do magic -- it's a regulated educated profession, like medicine or law.
- Did I mention nothing has changed, socially?
- The pace suggests that a huge prolonged battle, perhaps an entire war, is being set up... until the climactic battle happens over the course of a dozen pages and the book wraps up. Nobody knows what happened, which allows:
- Nothing has changed at the end of the book
Apparently book one of N where N >> 3, but you wouldn't know it from internal evidence.
